"By virtue of an act of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts made and passed, on the fourteenth day of February in the year of our Lord, eighteen hundred and fourteen, entitled an act to incorporate the town of Stroudwater." - Excerpt from a letter written by Archelaus Lewis, a Massachusetts Justice of the Peace, to Nathaniel Partridge, notifying the latter of Stroudwater's incorporation. Stroudwater would officially be re-named Westbrook in honor of Col. Thomas Westbrook before the end of 1814.
