For Don Doane, the Beat Goes On

Seacoastonline.com:
Legendary trombonist Don Doane, who has played with
Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman, Count Basie and Duke Ellington, takes the stage
for Harvestfest today ... Doane, 77, of Westbrook, Maine, now plays from a
wheelchair, having suffered a stroke that paralyzed his left side. "I can't
walk, can't use my left arm, I couldn't hold my slide trombone," Doane said in a
phone interview on Friday. "It's funny, the doctors said I would never play the
trombone again. I knew in the back of my mind, I had a valve trombone at
home."
Doane will be making a special appearance with the Port City Jazz Band at the York Harvestfest at the York Beach ball field today, from 12:30-4p.
