There's been some talk this year about road conditions being worse than ever before. When I asked Tom Eldridge, the Director of Public Works, he concurred with a quick "absolutely." According to Eldridge, the pothole season started early and has lasted longer than usual. Generally, the season starts about this time of year, Eldridge said, but this year it started about the second week in February and is still going strong. As for the city's trouble spots, Eldridge said that Spring Street and Cumberland Street have been giving the department the most issues. Unfortunately, Eldridge said, the only remedies at this time of year are temporary patches.
As for the posting of Brook Street, Hardy Road, Mast Road, and Methodist Road, Eldridge said there's no correlation between the posting of these roads and the roads' conditions. It is simply part of state law that these roads are off-limits to vehicles weighing more than 23,000 pounds between March 1 and May 1.
