Westbrook Could Vote on the Fluoridation of Tap Water

PPH:

A citizens' group based in Portland [FLOW] will announce today its plans to start
a petition drive aimed at forcing the Portland Water District to stop adding
fluoride to the drinking water it extracts from Sebago Lake.

[snip]

If FLOW can get [8,954] signatures, a November referendum question would be
presented to voters in the affected communities of Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland,
Falmouth, Gorham, Portland, Raymond, Scarborough, South Portland, Standish,
Westbrook and Windham.

Fluoridation Ineffective & Harmful, studies show

Over 2,490 professionals urge the US Congress to stop water fluoridation until Congressional hearings are conducted, citing scientific evidence that fluoridation, long promoted to fight tooth decay, is ineffective and has serious health risks. See statement at FluorideAction.net

Also, eleven Environmental Protection Agency employee unions representing over 7000 environmental and public health professionals called for a moratorium on drinking water fluoridation programs across the country, and have asked EPA management to recognize fluoride as posing a serious risk of causing cancer in people. (1a)

Last election day, 53 US cities rejected fluoridation joining a growing list of communities saying "No," to fluoridation. (1)

-- The Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, Canada’s leading voice on environmental health issues, released a statement opposing fluoridation. (2)

-- The National Kidney Foundation dropped its fluoridation support replacing it with this caution: “Individuals with CKD [Chronic Kidney Disease] should be notified of the potential risk of fluoride exposure.” (3)

-- Researchers reporting in the Oct 6 2007 British Medical Journal indicate that fluoridation never was proven safe or effective and may be unethical. (4)

-- “A qualitative review of ...studies found a consistent and strong association between the exposure to fluoride and low IQ,” concluded Tang el al., in "Fluoride and Children’s Intelligence: A Meta-analysis” in Biological Trace Element Research (5)

-- Scientific American editors wrote in January 2008, "Some recent studies suggest that over-consumption of fluoride can raise the risks of disorders affecting teeth, bones, the brain and the thyroid gland"

-- Dr. A. K. Susheela, a leading fluoride expert, explains in a video why US physicians overlook fluoride as a possible cause of diseases commonly caused by fluoride. http://tinyurl.com/Susheela

-- A study in the Fall 2008 Journal of Public Health Dentistry reveals that cavity-free teeth have little to do with fluoride intake. Researchers report, "The benefits of fluoride are mostly topical…while fluorosis is clearly more dependent on fluoride intake."

-- Research published in Biological Trace Element Research (April 2009). indicates that blood fluoride levels were significantly higher in patients with osteosarcoma than in control groups. (13) Osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer, occurs mostly in children and young adults

A Tennessee State legislator who is also an MD is urging all Tennessee Water Districts to stop fluoridation, reported a Tennessee newspaper on 11/29/08. At least 30 Tennessee water districts have already complied with his request.(6)

Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Arvid Carlsson, says, “Fluoridation is against all principles of modern pharmacology. It's really obsolete.”

Fluoride jeopardizes health - even at low levels deliberately added to public water supplies, according to data presented in a 2006 National Academy of Sciences' (NAS) National Research Council (NRC) report. Fluoride poses risks to the thyroid gland, diabetics, kidney patients, high water drinkers and others and can severely damage children's teeth. (11) At least three panel members advise avoiding fluoridated water.

The Professionals’ Statement also references:

-- The new American Dental Association policy recommending infant formula NOT be prepared with fluoridated water.
-- The CDC’s concession that the predominant benefit of fluoride is topical not systemic.
-- CDC data showing that dental fluorosis, caused by fluoride over-exposure, now impacts one third of American children.
-- Major research indicating little difference in decay rates between fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities.
-- A Harvard study indicating a possible link between fluoridation and bone cancer.

if you need floride get it in your toothpaste Not your water

I cannot afford toothpaste as I am poor, and using the computer in the library to read this. You are insensitive. Also, I need the iodine in my salt, so don't take that away from me either.

I hope that I'm not the only one relieved that the case against fluoride has evolved from the government mind control conspiracy of the 1980s to health concerns.

I don't know if it's dangerous or not. I suppose the questions that need to be asked are:

1. Do in-home water filtration systems (Brita, Pur, or house-wide filters) filter fluoride from the water? If so, then the people who sign the petition should do so on a purely financial concern (how much does it cost to add fluoride?).

2. Does the potential harm outweigh the potential benefit?

Ideologues from both sides of the issue will have already made up their minds, but I've read a lot of possibles out there on both sides of the issue.

Without the answers to the above questions I confess that I just don't have an opinion. Hopefully my late entry won't preclude someone enlightening the readers with the answers to the questions (so I don't have to look it up myself if the issue finds its way onto a ballot).

1. Do in-home water filtration systems (Brita, Pur, or house-wide filters) filter fluoride from the water?

NO THEY DO NOT. ANY CHARCOAL FILTRATION WILL NOT FILTER OUT FLUORIDE. REVERSE OSMOSIS OR DISTILLATION IS THE ONLY WAY TO REMOVE FLUORIDE (OR GET POLITICAL AND GET IT OUT OF THE WATER SUPPLIES) PARDON MY CAPS - JUST TRYING TO DIFFERENTIATE YOUR QUESTIONS FROM MY ANSWERS.

BESIDES FLUORIDE WILL STILL BE INHALED IN SHOWERS AND ABSORBED IN BATHS. AND UNLESS YOU USE BOTTLED WATER TO MAKE PASTA, RICE, SOUPS, GRAVIES, ETC, YOU'LL GET YOUR DAILY DOSE IN OTHER PLACES THAN JUST YOUR TAP.

2. Does the potential harm outweigh the potential benefit?

SINCE MODERN SCIENCE SHOWS THAT INGESTED FLUORIDE DOES NOT REDUCE TOOTH DECAY, THE QUESTION IS MOOT. IT'S ONLY POLITICS THAT KEEPS FLUORIDATION GOING.

Ideologues from both sides of the issue will have already made up their minds, but I've read a lot of possibles out there on both sides of the issue.

ACTUALLY, THERE IS ONLY ONE SIDE - SCIENCE - WHICH TELLS US THAT FLUORIDATION IS NOT STOPPING TOOTH DECAY AND IS HARMFUL TO SOME PEOPLE.

FLUORIDATIONISTS JUST EXPECT YOU TO BELIEVE THEM AND NOT CHECK OUT THEIR SCIENCE BECAUSE FLUORIDATION HAS NEVER BEEN SUPPORTED WITH VALID SCIENCE.

Without the answers to the above questions I confess that I just don't have an opinion.
Hopefully my late entry won't preclude someone enlightening the readers with the answers to the questions (so I don't have to look it up myself if the issue finds its way onto a ballot).

THIS IS THE PROBLEM. IT'S UNDERSTANDABLE THAT MOST PEOPLE DON'T HAVE THE TIME OR INTEREST TO STUDY THIS ISSUE (AND PROBABLY A MILLION MORE CONTROVERSIAL SUBECTS) SO OFTEN THEY WILL SIMPLY ASK THEIR DENTIST - WHO HAS BEEN TRAINED TO TELL YOU FLUORIDE IS GOOD. HE OR SHE THINKS THE SCIENCE SUPPORTS THEM. BUT THEY MUST SPEND THEIR TIME KEEPING UP ON THE NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN DENTISTRY, KEEPING THEIR BUSINESS AFLOAT AND DOING THEIR JOBS. THE RARE DENTISTS WHO ACTUALLY LOOK AT THE SCIENCE DISCOVER THEY HAVE BEEN DUPED INTO BEING THE FLUORIDE SALESPEOPLE FOR THEIR UNIONS SUCH AS THE AMERICAN DENTAL ASSOCIATION WHICH IS HEAVILY FUNDED BY THE CORPORATIONS WHO PROFIT FROM TOOTH DECAY.

ADVERSE HEALTH EFFECTS OF FLUORIDE AR HERE: HTTP://WWW.FLUORIDEACTION.NET/HEALTH

IF YOU HAVE NO OPINION, YOU SHOULD HONOR THE WISHES OF THOSE IN YOUR COMMUNITY WHO STRONGLY OPPOSE FLUORIDATION. IT'S VERY EASY FOR YOU TO GET A DAILY DOSE OF FLUORIDE FROM A CUP OF TEA (NATURALLY FLUORIDATED) AND FROM BRUSHING YOUR TEETH.

You guys can speculate all day about fluoride and whether or not is it dangerous. Fo me I simply looked up its Material Safety Data Sheet and that was enough to convince me that I do NOT want this in my water. link to MSDS follows:
