First-year Westbrook High School Principal Thomas O’Malley is resigning his- John C.L. Morgan
position at the end of the 2011-2012 school year, according to School
Superintendent Marc Gousse. Gousse said O’Malley made his resignation official
in a letter dated Dec. 19. O’Malley’s resignation is effective June 30, 2012,
Gousse said.
Westbrook High has hired new varsity baseball and- John C.L. Morgan
softball coaches. Greg Souza, a former assistant, is the new Blue Blazes'
baseball coach, and Dee (Regan) Allen will coach softball. Allen has coached
Portland for the last three seasons. Their nominations were approved Wednesday
night by the Westbrook School Committee.
Mike Rutherford remembers how his parents used to watch all of his games when he- John C.L. Morgan
played for Portland High. Wanting to do the same for his daughter and stepson,
and knowing that would be difficult with his job as the Westbrook baseball
coach, Rutherford resigned last week after four seasons with the Blue Blazes.
"It came down to family," Rutherford said.
[Westbrook High student Paige] Fogg was among the girls getting a taste of- John C.L. Morgan
firefighting Friday from Westbrook firefighter Rachael Welsh at the Totally
Trades Conference. The event, organized by the training group Women, Work and
Community, aimed to expose girls to jobs typically held by men. About 75 girls
from several high schools participated in the event at Westbrook Regional
Vocational Center.
Scott Heath of Westbrook received good news Wednesday while resting his left arm- John C.L. Morgan
after experiencing pain while throwing a pitch in the second inning Tuesday
against Cheverus. Heath was named the Maine Gatorade high school baseball player
of the year after going 5-0 in the regular season with a 0.00 earned-run
average. Heath has 41 strikeouts in 32 innings and batted .390 with 18 RBI. The
Blue Blazes finished with a 14-2 record after a 6-2 loss to the Stags and will
enter the Western Class A playoffs as the No. 2 seed.
Understand that in his youth, [former Westbrook basketball standout Matt]Hyland is a standout from SoPo who recently announced his acceptance of a scholarship to Gonzaga, a perennial participant in March Madness.
Donahue could find pickup games in Westbrook, where he lived, anytime he wanted.
That's not always true today, in Westbrook, Portland or anywhere. "It was
survival of the fittest. You didn't leave until you lost." Donahue had the rep
of a pure shooter. That was before he scored 57 points against Deering High one
night in a crowded gym. That was before there was a 3-point line. Donahue set
the benchmark that night. "From the beginning, Keegan [Hyland] wanted to play
college basketball at the highest level," said Donahue. "Duke might have been
the school he first mentioned. He asked me what he needed to do.
I think it is clear we need to continue to prove- John C.L. Morgan
quality experiences to all of our students in both athletics and activities with
less and less resources. I am a firm believer that coaching is teaching and
athletics just uses the courts and playing fields as its classroom. I am
extremely fortunate that the Westbrook community believes this and continues to
support these co-curricular events for our kids. The athletic administrators
across the state will continue to look for ways to save our communities tax
dollars while still producing a quality experience for students.

time Faithfull decided to score, helping Cheverus take control in the third
quarter on the way to a 56-46 victory against Westbrook in the Western Class A
boys’ basketball final Saturday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

The two players (and their teams, of course) will match up tomorrow night at the Cumberland County Civic Center for the Class A Western Finals, as the Blue Blazes attempt to return to the state finals for the first time since their 2000 loss to Bangor.

[Emmanuel] Vincent, a junior at Westbrook High, is among the rarest of high- John C.L. Morgan
school athletes this winter. He is competing in two sports: track, which he’s
been running since the fifth grade, and wrestling, which he took up about two
months ago. He admits to being exhausted some nights when his wrestling practice
ends. Considering that he has a full workout with the track team before he goes
to wrestling practice, that’s not surprising.
Following the 1980 season, Dyer took over the- John C.L. Morgan
Westbrook High School [boys' basketball] program and, during the next 10 years,
led the Blue Blazes to the tournament nine times, playing in four Western Class
A championship games and winning the state Class A title in 1984. Dyer’s record
at Westbrook was 152-6.
D'Alfonso, you see, came to USM last season after- John C.L. Morgan
two years playing community college baseball. This is his final college season,
and his goal is to parlay his power to a future in pro baseball.
Those who see him daily say he's on his way. "His power is better than any I've ever
seen," said USM Coach Ed Flaherty. "I'm talking about legitimate home run
hitting power. At batting practice everyone stops to watch him hit."
